Historical Background

COPEDU PLC is a microfinance institution that offers financial services, such as credits and savings, to its customers.

Registered as a Microfinance Company with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) on February 21, 2013, COPEDU PLC received certification from the Central Bank of Rwanda (BNR) on March 13, 2014, enabling it to provide microfinance services.

On January 25, 2019, COPEDU PLC changed its name to COPEDU PLC in accordance with Law N° 17/2018 of April 13, 2018, governing commercial companies. This transformation signifies COPEDU PLC’s status as a Public Limited Company authorized to seek investments from the public through shares.

Initially known as COPEDU-KIGALI, the institution operated solely within Kigali city and the former Kigali-Ngari boundaries as a cooperative established by the non-profit organization DUTERIMBERE ASBL on June 15, 1997. The establishment of COPEDU-KIGALI was based on a study conducted by DUTERIMBERE ASBL, indicating the potential for improvement in savings and loan services through a cooperative model. Consequently, DUTERIMBERE ASBL led the initiative to establish COOPEDU-KIGALI, collaborating with other partners.

In 2005, BNR granted COPEDU-KIGALI a license for deposit and lending activities. Subsequently, in 2008, COOPEDU-KIGALI modernized its operations by incorporating technology.

In 2009, following a resolution passed during the General Assembly in October 2009, COPEDU-KIGALI changed its name to COPEDU. Then, in 2012, during the general assembly meeting on December 22, 2012, COPEDU transitioned into a company, renaming itself COPEDU plc. Initially, COPEDU PLC had 12,996 shareholders who were former members of the COPEDU cooperative, with a share capital of 790,156,800 Frw, equivalent to 1,975,392 shares valued at 400 Frw per share.

Presently, COPEDU PLC operates in the City of Kigali and the Eastern Province, with its headquarters located in KICUKIRO district.
