The General Assembly for delegates of RPF Inkotanyi in the City of Kigali on Sunday elected Pascal Nyamurinda as the party chairperson in the City of Kigali, replacing Monique Mukaruliza.
Nyamurinda is the City Mayor, just like his predecessor before she was appointed High Commissioner to Zambia, a position that could not have enabled her to lead the party in the city, because she will be working from outside the country.
In the assembly that was held at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC Kigali) in Kicukiro District, Nyamurinda scooped 468 votes out of 495 while his challenger, Phocas Musemakweri got 27 votes.
Following his election, Nyamurinda vowed to continue strengthening party structures within the city right from the grassroots by building on the achievements registered under his predecessor.
He also said he would strive to improve service delivery, planting of trees on all the mountains surrounding the city and bring order within Kigali especially by ensuring that business operators transact in designated areas.
“I will also champion the efforts to have in place a centralized sewerage system and boost general hygiene in Kigali,” Nyamurinda told the assembly.
Meanwhile, during the meeting, members said that a lot more needs to be done to ensure all households in Kigali adopt the use of cooking gas in the effort to safeguard the environment, which has been devastated by the continued use of charcoal.
They also called for the reinforcement of human resource at the cell level, saying that there are many employees at the sector level, yet most services have been decentralized to the cells.
The meeting agreed that strategies should be drawn to engage university graduates in different communities in the preparation and consulted regularly during the execution of performance contracts (Imihigo) within local governments.
The meeting also tackled the problem of drug abuse especially among the youths and called for the involvement of all community members to fight the vice, especially by reporting those within communities that distribute and consume these drugs.
